A Little Jazz Piano Sonata in C
for solo piano
This is my attempt to clothe the structure of a Mozartian Classical Sonata in some of the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic garments of jazz. The first movement is in sonata form, the second an ABABA structure (but also a transcription of my song On Telling you Not Nearly Often Enough That I Love You, - a Valentine's Day present for my wife Cathy), and the finale a sonata-rondo-with-fugato.
Notwithstanding the Valentine's Day dedication, the sonata as a whole
was dedicated to my brother, Chris Burt, on his 60th birthday - a fine pianist and musician, and from whom my very first jazz came at an early age.
