Composed in 2010 as a thank you to a former pupil who had helped me out with a music tech issue, the Jazz Diptych marries together two musical elements which rarely meet in my composings - the world of jazz (blues, swing and funk) and the world of church organs! Trio is on the one hand a kind of trio sonata movement (at least it is for a while) and a jazz trio of
solo, changes and bass on the other; while the Blue Toccata unites the world of the 19th Century Cavaille-Coll school of organ toccatas (Boellmann springs a little to my mind) with a twelve bar blues sequence mostly in 7/8 time. The result is both unlikely and yet strangely inevitable, in equal measure!
