Minimalis I is the first of a projected sequence of (possibly) eight works for
various solo instruments, voices, and chamber combinations. Each of the works
is conceived as a stand-alone entity, and also as part of a cohesive sequence of music, the order of which may be flexible. Each of the works will explore in differing ways the use of minimalist techniques, principally repetition and micro-variation of short motifs, as a vehicle for building single-movement structures of robust and rigorously proportioned quasi-symphonic architecture. The minimalist techniques
therefore become no more than incidental to the overall structural character
of the music rather than its driving force. Minimalis I was composed in 2016 and is dedicated to the English pianist Eleanor Hodgkinson.
