Twenty Four Preludes for Piano
Composed between May 2019 and February 2020, these 24 Preludes are my take on the tradition of Bach, Chopin, Shostakovich et al, in providing a piece in each of the 24 major and minor keys. The pieces can be performed in three different ways:
i) Each Prelude may stand as a miniature in its own right, and selections of them may be made at the performer's discretion;
ii) Each of the four "Books" (six Preludes each) may also stand alone as a complete suite, independently from the other three;
iii) The work as a whole comprises a cohesive and integrated sequence of the four "Books", lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes. When performed in this way, the 6 Preludes in each Book should segue together, pausing for longer at the end of each Book as one might pause between the movements of a sonata or a symphony.
You can see and hear me play the entire work by following the You Tube links below - books 1 and 2 were filmed in 2019 as I travelled around the country, each prelude on a different piano - teaching rooms, studios, private houses, churches, concert halls; Book 3 was filmed at home during the 2020-1 lockdown; and Book 4 filmed at Uppingham School, April-June 2021.
